Food Photography Equipment

About Me!

Hi, thanks for stopping by, my name is Anna Kosti and I am 17 years old. I live in Larnaca, Cyprus, with my family and I am still going to high school. I fell in love with baking since the age of 9! I started with simple recipes to making complicated and fascinating desserts. I am planning to join university next year, overseas, to become a professional pastry chef.

Are you still wondering which is the best Food Photography Equipment to use? Here I will answer to all of your questions!

When I started taking dessert pictures, I was unhappy with the results because I didn’t knew what to add to the background to make it look professional. I was wondering which is the best camera, lens, props, backdrop to use…we’ve all been there searching how to make the picture look more “Instagramable”.

CAMERA

Food Photography can be a bit tricky, at first, when I started taking pictures with my phone the colours weren’t as good as I wished. Now, I have updated to a Canon Camera 2000D with a 5omm Canon lens. Not only the quality and colours are better but the pictures look a lot more professional. A camera can be an expensive investment at first but believe me its totally worth it. It takes pictures from a better angle, with wider screen dimensions. This camera costs under $550 and the lens is less than $150.

BACKGROUND

As for the background, I use 2 wooden backdrops and a marble tile. They are very easy to use and to set up. Sometimes, I also use backdrop papers to adjust with the colours of my dessert or food. Sometimes when I am taking pictures of cupcakes or cakes, I use more pale patterns of backdrops to show contrast and emphasise the cake. But when I am preparing an Instagram dessert/ picture I usually use a marble backdrop and some background decor. You can find these under $50 and are very functional.

PROPS & DECOR

For the Background I use different cutlery, plates, flowers, vases etc. I usually adapt the colours according to the season and colours of the dessert. Let’s say I have a Chocolate dessert like Lava cake, I will use a white plate for contrast and then white-black backdrops. But when I am shooting a cake I place it on a cake stand and use plates & cutlery for the background to make it look rich and professional.

Hopefully this post have been helpful and improve your pictures, as well as make them look more professional.
